WEST NILE VIRUS

The Brazos County Health Department (BCHD) is again asking citizens of Brazos County to report dead birds of the following species: blue jays, cardinals, crows and raptors (owls, hawks, vultures). BCHD inspectors will pick up fresh, dead birds of these species to test for West Nile Virus (WNV) (skeletonized or rotted specimens CANNOT be tested). Bird and mosquito testing will indicate specific “hot spots” in the area, but residents are reminded that ALL of Brazos County is positive for WNV.
To help avoid WNV, the Four D’s should be practiced:

1) Most importantly, Drain all standing/stagnant water around the house.
2) Use repellants with DEET as an active ingredient. Other approved active ingredients include oil of lemon eucalyptus and picaridin.
3) Dress in long sleeves/long pants
4) Avoid being outside at Dusk and Dawn when WNV- carrying mosquitoes are most active.
